The exploration of the Washington County, Maryland Pottery Trail by the South Mountain Journal brings us to ceramic artist Pamela Hall in the hip and historic town of Hagerstown, Maryland. The owner of Twin Moon Pottery, Pamela creates beautiful functional art for home and to accent your life in both porcelain and stoneware.

Pamela Hall; ceramic artist, mother, wife, and community member. Pamela is rooted in community. She learned the art of clay within community. And she practices the art of clay through community-the collectors and buyers of her art.

For most of her life, Pamela was fascinated by the arts, particularly clay, when she took a class as an elective in college. But, she went on to pursue a career as a RN. During the fall of 2002, Pamela enrolled in a ceramics class at Hagerstown Community College (HCC). She was immediately hooked and quickly learned everything she could about the art of clay. After the college program was shut down for renovations, Pamela decided to open her studio, which she named Twin Moons Pottery.

The seeds of the idea for opening a studio were planted by her husband and quiet assistant, Paul. Paul, missing his wife who was spending multiple evenings per week at the pottery studio in HCC asked what it would take to have her home more. Her response was a kiln, and Paul set about to get Pamela her first kiln and pave the way for the eventual studio.

Although she is bon vivant when it comes to pottery, the art form itself is not enough to satisfy Pamela. Community is the cornerstone of her whole process. It is how she learned pottery, and spent years with many of the same people taking pottery classes over and over together. A tight knit group formed. When she opened her own studio, she baked in that same welcoming and supportive environment for the classes that she offers.

Pamela's work is inspired by nature, and she creates many botanical-themed designs - she he creates her designs using natural materials, such as flowers, leaves, and feathers, for inspiration and creates within her classic style. Pamela is also intrigued by the whimsical and her sense of humor, is reflected in the faces and animals that she incorporates into some of her sculpted work.

Her work, whether she is teaching or creating pottery is both an act and expression of love. Whatever the function of a piece, it was art from the start-from conception to completion Pamela creates art with clay. She uses various techniques to create unique and classic pottery pieces, including hand-building, wheel throwing, and glazing and her attention to detail is evident in her intricate patterns, textures, and sculptures. Pamela's work has been featured in galleries and juried shows throughout the Mid-Atlantic region and she shares her knowledge by teaching private and group classes in her studio.

If you're looking for a distinctive and special piece of art for your home, plan a visit to Twin Moons Pottery and check out Pamela's work. You won't be disappointed.

Nestled in the Appalachian foothills that make up the southwestern corridor of South Mountain, Twin Moons Pottery is one of 10 stops along the Washington County, Maryland Pottery Trail studio tour. Touring the studios along the trail is a delightful way to meet and enjoy ten different artists, their styles, and their approaches to pottery. “When an artist creates in collaboration with the spirit of their location, it becomes a treasure of a lifetime,” says Betsy De Vore, Director of Marketing for Visit Hagerstown and Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau.
